Verdi's La Traviata this August

OPERA THEATER OF CONNECTICUT celebrates its 37th season (of presenting affordable opera in an intimate setting) with a production of La Traviata, Verdi’s timeless story of the beautiful courtesan who falls in love with a handsome, adoring poet, leading to their individual heart-breaking conclusions, at the Andrews Memorial Theater, 54 East Main St, Clinton.

La Traviata is one of the great favorites of opera, blending the elements that create electricity on the opera stage – love and sacrifice, power and manipulation, obligation and tragedy. Based on the novel La Dame aux camélias (sometimes called in English Camille) by Alexandre Dumas, fils, Violetta, a Parisienne courtesan, falls in love with Alfredo, a young poet. Germont, Alfredo’s father, seeks to end the mad and impetuous affair before his family’s honor is ruined. At his urging, Violetta, dying of tuberculosis, renounces Alfredo and returns to her previous lifestyle. The repentant Alfredo joins her at her deathbed, declaring his undying love.

Sarah Callinan returns to Opera Theater of Connecticut to sing the role of the beautiful courtesan, Violetta Valéry, Spencer Hamlin sings her passionate and impetuous lover, Alfredo Germont, and his father, Giorgio Germont, whose love and concern for his entire family sets the tragedy in action, will be Adelmo Guidarelli who is making his Verdi debut in this legendary role, all accompanied by Opera Theater of Connecticut’s wonderful orchestra and chorus.
